February

Here's what you should be doing this month.

On those wet days when the grass and beds are sodden, you could continue with any of the hard landscaping jobs which have accumulated, mending fences and structures within the garden.

It’s still a good time to prune and train overgrown evergreens, with a view to the shapes and structures within the garden.  It is also a good time to plant bare-root trees and shrubs in advance of spring. Please take care if you are pruning at height, you don’t want to fall from a ladder.

If it’s not too wet, the lawn would benefit from some of your time.  Worm casts should be raked or brushed away, as well as removing any fallen leaves.  Lawn weeds can also be addressed whilst the ground is soft. You may also be able to define the edges of the grass which are probably a little untidy following the wet winter months.

Looking at your beds, you will probably still find leaves and some weeds which can be cleared. You could also add some organic matter such as compost or well-rotted farm-yard manure as a mulch. When working on the beds, take care not to disturb any spring bulbs which may be starting to appear.

It is a fantastic time of year as the buds and bulbs start to reappear, enjoy rediscovering your precious outside space.

It may feel like the garden needs quite a lot of tidying at this time but do it in small doses and it won’t seem such an overwhelming task.
