What to do in your garden this month

October

Here's what you should be doing this month.

Cut back any perennials which have died back but leave any attractive seed heads for the birds and winter interest. Seed heads with a frost coating in mid-winter look fantastic on a bright winter morning.

Lawns could do with some care and attention now: scarifying, aerating and an autumn feed will help your grass get through the winter. You can still mow at this time of year but leave the grass a little longer than you normally would.

Bare root trees and shrubs can be planted once again in preparation for next year.  This is the preferred time for planting as it gives the new plants time to get established before the winter starts in earnest.

Hardwood cuttings can be taken now from woody plants in the garden.  These will take months to root but will need minimal supervision and will provide new plants in the spring for potting on.

Finally, it isn’t too late to plant spring flowering bulbs (except for tulips) and winter bedding plants for colour if you have not got round to it yet.
